The man who resigned as Goa's Tourism Minister this weekend, and has since been missing, has been named the main suspect in the murder of Nadia Torrado, with whom he was allegedly in a relationship.
Documents filed by the Goa police in a local court on Tuesday state that Torrado died because of injuries caused by a blunt weapon, and that Pacheco, who belongs to Sharad Pawar's nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is the police's prime suspect.
The post-mortem shows 11 injuries on Torrado's arms, thighs, lower lip and chest, allowing the police to now confirm what many women's groups have argued all along - that 27-year-old was killed, something her family had contested.
Torrado, a friend of the minister, died on May 30, allegedly after consuming rat poison. She was first taken to a local hospital in Goa, then a few days later moved to Mumbai, and finally to Chennai where she died.
Her relatives had stood by Pacheco, insisting that Nadia died after mistakenly using rat poison instead of toothpaste.
Pacheco appealed for anticipatory bail on Tuesday afternoon, through his Officer on Special Duty (OSD). He did not appear in court but said that he is being defamed by political rivals.
On Friday, Pacheco was interrogated for several hours by the police, which at the time was looking into allegations of abetment of suicide. Pacheco's questioning was meant to continue the next day, but he didn't show up. All police stations and airports were then alerted.
In its report filed in court, the Goa Police states that evidence related to Nadia's murder was destroyed systematically, most likely by Pacheco.
